Nice start Kent, now keep up the good work! I can be grateful,I will remunerate you for that!
It can seem kinda weird, but I had never heard of brooms before!
Latin name: Cytisus scoparius
Hey, this riminds me something: many years ago I spent a couple of days in Rome and they call what you have just described scopa.
Italy is an interesting country, it's worth a visit and maybe even two!
broom [broom, brm]
n (plural brooms)
1. brush for sweeping: a brush with a head of twigs or bristles attached to a long thin handle, used for sweeping indoors or outdoors
2. plant with bright yellow flowers: a wild or cultivated bush. Flowers: bright yellow. Native to: Europe, Asia.
Latin name: Cytisus scoparius
3. plant like broom: a bush resembling broom. Flowers: yellow. Native to: Europe, Asia.
Genera: GenistaSpartium
vt (past and past participle broomed, present participle broom·ing, 3rd person present singular brooms)
sweep something: to sweep something with a broom or brush
[ Old English brōm < Germanic]
It is the first usage that I am talking about. So do I need to bring my own or not?
...I don't know enough about Sherman to pick a winner in this fight.
Thank you Mr.Angelo for your kind welcome!
I think that Holyfield is risking serious injury (I have read that Sherman is a hard puncher and that, after this fight, Evander wants a piece of Vitali) and I am very concerned about him. I tried to save him by offering him a lot of money to stay out of the ring and work for me, but he refused. The guy seems very stubborn!
I think that Frazier was willing to fight everyone ( it was very important to him to prove he was not afraid of anybody, but his management was constantly trying to protect him). The fact that they found a way to avoid the WBA tournment is a convincing proof.
Mr. Webber: Welcome to the board! I hope you and the other newbies will stay here and post about boxing! As a powerful man who doesn't know anything about brooms, do you think Holyfield will "sweep" another title belt? Also, do you believe Frazier ducked Lyle and Shavers?
What's a broom ? I have no idea! I told you that I am a powerful and wealthy man, but I never told you that I am educated, I don't know difficult words. Your first duty will be to explain me what a broom is.
Should I bring my own broom or will you be supplying them?
Ok Kent, you can start tomorrow! Your salary initially will be low, but it will gradually increase and in a few years you will be able to afford up to one tenth of the things I can already afford. Great, we have a deal, a real deal!
Ha Ha! point well taken. You can be my boss, how much are going to pay me?
Can I start tommorow?
My apologies, like I said, I was just putting down what I was thinking at the moment.
Believe me, I don't think that much of myself to put others down.
I have to admit I am jealous of Kent! When you can eat never more than twice a week, jealousy is never out of question! Mitch Green is my best friend!
Kent, if you believe I'm jealous of you you're a complete nut ! I already own
2 villas in Beverly Hills and I'm planning to buy another one! One day you are going to work for me, I'm gonna be your boss!
Hey Kent, how in hell do you dare to say that about me ?
I'm not jealous of you and I never will!!!!
I hope someone doesn't come here and take offense to me saying there could be some jealousy out there but I was just thinking out loud and sometimes I forget that everything we post on the Web is public.
Oh well though, it is out there now.
Add on to my last post: I didn't use my notes as the words started flowing and I went with what I put down.
So I didn't mention Sylvia getting his arm broken and not tapping which shows it is possible to not tap out.
In hindsight it would have helped me make my point better but I still likely would have been raked over the coals by some of the readers anyway.
I do think there is some jealousy from some of the Eastside readers that people like me get to be on the homepage of the site and they, who think they are experts themselves, are not given the opportunity and that is why they can be mean spirited.
It also bugs them that Eastside sometimes will get passes for people like me to get in free to fight cards.
They may think, how come he gets to go and I don't?
But they don't seem to see that one of the reasons why I am on and they aren't is I don't trash talk and take cheap shots at anyone
Thanks guys. Mark, I think the readers missed my point about an old school fighter not quiting in the ring no matter what.
The old school to me is symbolized Joe Frazier picking himself off of the deck six times against Foreman and I think Toney, despite his trash talking, has that kind of warrior mentality.
Fighters like that would die first before conceeding defeat.
I had some notes that I was going to use for my article that included a reference to the fact that MMA fighter Tim Sylvia got his arm broken in a fight and he didn't tap out but the referee stopped the fight.
I think the same thing would happen if Toney was injured like that, the referee would have to stop the fight.
I don't mind the comments section as it is gage on how many people have read an article and the negative remarks don't bother me in the least.
What did bug me though was a typo that I missed and the editor missed that I had him change.
Kent, that's an excellent article on Toney and his upcoming bout.Given that Toney has had 80 plus fights and has never been stopped backs up your comment about his greta heart and chin - I think he's only been floored a couple of times and when you consider that he's gone from middleweight to heavyweight in his career its an astonishing achievement. I'm frustrated that he couldn't have done more at heavyweight and getting caught up in two drug scandals after fights hasn't helped his cause either.
Eastside boxing is an excellent webiste for keeping people up to date with boxing news past and present and features some great articles, but its dedication to giving fans a voice through comments boxes and responding to articles is a disaster. You'll see very few sensible comments/arguments, just a lot of partisan and foul mouthed comments, many with racist undertones as well.
Thank you Kent, I have read your article, it was interesting and very well written. I have no idea who is gonna win, but I don't think that 41 is the right age to start a new career in
a sport which, from what I can understand, is at least as hard as boxing. James Toney, in my opinion, should stay home.
I have an article on the homepage at Eastside Boxing about Toney verses Couture in a mixed martial arts match.

I have never taken so much flak from the readers in all of the things I have written than from this article, not just for picking Toney, but because I said that I didn't think Toney would quit no matter what.
We used to get all of Tyson's fights "almost" live in Roma, if I remember well they used to show them on a particular channel about 1 day after they happened (always with the comment of Rino Tommasi, the Italiano Howard Cossell).
After Tyson's era all of that abruptly stopped with only a few exceptions (I remember watching Lewis-Klitschko live or almost live).
Nowadays I almost never watch fights on TV (often they don't show them, other times I should pay to watch them and other times I just miss them because I don't know on which channel they want to show them or just I don't know that those bouts are taking place).
Nowadays if I'm interested in a fight I wait until it's on You Tube. But I am more interested in fights from the past than in modern ones. Most of the times I watch fights from the 50s,60s until 90s. If there is an important fight (especially if it's a heavyweight fight) I usually watch it on You Tube , but usually only once, while I watched quite a few times some fights from the past.
"Closed circuit" has also "closed interest" for some fans. I remember the 1970's, after Ali took back the title by beating Foreman----suddenly, Heavyweight Title Fights were in prime time on network television. Sometimes they were on Friday nights, but it could be any night of the week---a real undisputed Champion fighting on free TV. At school, that's all we talked about for 2 weeks leading up to the fight. Newspapers ran big stories on those fights too---before and after. The torch passed to Larry Holmes, and he continued fighting on prime time television for most of his title reign. It had casual fans talking boxing. During the Tyson era, this all ended---and now, you have to pay to watch the fights on television and the audience is narrowed down to core fans, not millions of casual fans. That, together with the fact that any average fighter can be crowned Champion, has whittled away interest, particularly in the heavyweight division. People say that Americans aren't interested because the heavyweight champ isn't an American. I don't agree with that. Believe me, there were millions and millions of American fans of Roberto Duran when he was a Champion back in the '70s. Fans here embraced Lennox Lewis too. The fact is, it's getting too hard to see the fights----they are on too late and you have to pay too much for them---and the fighters aren't as "interesting" as the ones we had years ago. Today's guys fight like robots and they go 12 rounds instead of 15.
Sad to see another of the top contenders of the 70s in Mac Foster pass away. Foster was a very exciting, hard punching and genuine world class talent. Several impressive early knockout wins over Williams (x2), Spencer and Folley with losses to the likes of Ali, Quarry and Bugner nothing to be ashamed about. Quarry gets his best accolades for his fantastic trio of wins over Shavers, Lyle and Patterson but his demolition of Foster was a really impressive performance. Outside of the Klitschko brothers Foster had the power to be best in the world now and could trouble the dominant Ukrainians now.
The proliferation of belts is a huge problem in boxing, particularly when these belt holders seem reluctant to take risks and fight each other. However, with the heavyweight scene it seems as though the top contenders are very reluctant to fight each other and are happy to pick off journeymen and wait for 9-12 months in the hope of getting a title shot. Pathetic.
The fight with Holyfield-Williams is bizarre although the latter does have a win over Shannon Briggs. Its also unbelievable that Briggs can be the favourite to fight Vitali in October - what on earth has he done to deserve the chance? 3 victories over journeymen this year and one no decision after failing a drugs test. In his career he has only beaten a 49 yr old Foreman in what is regarded along with Ellis-Patterson and Lewis-Holyfield as the most outrageous and unfair decison of the 20th Century, a win over a 45 year old Ray Mercer and virtually no one who has ever been regarded as a top 20 heavyweight apart from Liakhovich. Somehow he's managed to avoid the genuine world class heavyweight talent in Holyfield, Tyson, Bowe, Moorer, McCall, Morrison, Tua, Byrd and even Golota. Not exactly a great resume from someone who has been competing for over 15 years. He's lost convincingly to every world class heavyweight he's faced as well as a couple of journeymen. Yet he gets a shot at the title without having to challenge anyone who is world ranked. When you consider that fighters of the claibre of a Quarry, Lyle and Young only had one shot at the title its enough to make your blood boil.
Angelo-
Yes, that was a nice performance! I wish I could watch that game, maybe is somewhere on the Internet. I heard people talk about that
game, but I never had the opportunity to watch it.
Massimo: Magic played forward, guard and center in that game and did all three well, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I want to wish Magic Johnson
a Happy Birthday. He is probably having a party over there in Beverly Hills. He is the only player in NBA history to win a MVP of the finals award as a rookie. Kareem got injured during the finals but Earvin told his teammates "don't worry, Magic is here" and played like a god the following game (scoring, if I remember correctly 42 points). Not even Wilt could achieve that! He has/had some talent for basketball and his no look assists were pretty cool.
Angelo-
I agree. Sometimes (actually pretty often lately) I don't know at least one of the boxers who are scheduled to fight for one of the belts and I struggle understanding what did he do to deserve the shot. For instance, like you, I had never heard of Sherman Williams before.
